Sunshades
Where shade cannot be found, consider getting one or more of our sunshades. The sunshades we offer are Very effective in keeping our domes cool in the hot sun because they allow airflow to dissipate heat. Since the dome's poles are external and the sunshade is placed on the outside of the poles, the sun's heat is blocked by the sunshade and is removed by natural convection airflow through the porous shade cloth and not radiated into the dome. For 14’, 18’, and 20’ domes, we recommend multiple small sunshades instead of one larger sunshade, because they fit the curve of the domed shape better and provide more space for heated air to escape.

If over-heating is likely a problem consider two or more sunshades. Arrange your sunshades such that they do not overlap each other completely. The airspace under the shades and the gaps between them will allow heat to be dissipated and escape rather than be radiated back into your dome. There are many ways to set up a sunshade so it is effective in keeping your dome cool. The sunshade can be wrapped on top of your dome (photo above right), or set up like a porch (see pictures below; the photo below right is our 10' dome with a sunshade).

Only cover your dome's poles with Shelter Systems' SunShades or identical shade cloth, never with a non-porous tarp of any kind. Doing so can cause the poles to over heat and deform your poles. It could also collect water and causeing your dome to collapse.

10' with shade

Shelter Systems' woven sunshades come in black or silver, blocking 80% and 70% sun, respectively. These sunshades fit the contour of the dome and the weave design allows air to pass through for maximum cooling and good handling in windy conditions, and prevent puddling of rain water. Black lasts about 6-8 yrs and Aluminet 4 yrs.

The Black Sunshade offers more shade, lasts longer and is less expensive.

Price:
$53 Black 80% Shade 12' x 16' (with 10 snap grips)
$120 Black 80% Shade 20' x 20' (with 18 snap grips)

The Silver Aluminet Sunshade acts like a mirror to reflect unwanted sunlight and radiant heat. These come with snap grips.

Price:
$113 Silver Aluninet 70% Shade 14' x 14' (with 10 snap grips)
$237 Silver Aluninet 70% Shade 21' x 21' (with 18 snap grips)

Clear Vinyl Windows
The 10’, 14’, 18’, and 20’ domes come standard with four frosted window panels above each door. These translucent windows let in more light than glass, but provide privacy, since you cannot see clearly through them. One or more translucent windows can be replaced with see-through clear vinyl windows.  30’ and 31‘ domes come standard with no windows, but it is possible to replace up to eight panels with either translucent or clear vinyl windows. Note that we do not recommend vinyl windows if the dome is to be put up or taken down in blow-freezing weather.

Price: $38 per window (not offered at this time)

Net Doors and NettingNet door

Net Doors: Domes come standard with doors made out of the same material as dome walls, and you can add mosquito net doors for bug protection. These are easily installed and are generous enough in width and length to keep bugs out without the need for breakable zippers. These net doors even keep out “no-see-ums”, those micro-gnats you can't see. Opening two to four doors across from each other results in pleasant cross ventilation. The 14', 18', and 20' domes can have as many as four net doors, 30’ and 31' domes can have as many as eight.

Price: $41 per net door (call for availability)

Netting: You can use our bulk netting to make your own net doors with Grip Clips and net covers for your upper vents with Velcro coins.

Price: $48 for four yards of 72” wide grey netting

Sticky Back Velcro
Sticky back Velcro coins and strips can be used to secure doors against high wind, close net doors, keep floors tightly attached to side walls, and to create a net closure for upper vent tube openings. Velcro strips can't be beat for sealing your dome's doors and shingles against wind and dust against dust and high wind – a must for Burning Man! See Instruction Manual under net doors, floors, and vent tubes for details on how to install Velcro coins and strips.

Sticky Back Velcro Coins (see photo):
Price: for 50-count 7/8" hook and loop Velcro Coins $13 (shipping included)

Sticky Back Velcro Strips: sold by the length, can be cut into smaller lengths
Price: Eight yards Velcro of both hook and loop Velcro $4.50 (shipping included)

Floor
Some type of ground cover must be used to keep dampness and white floor coverdirt from the ground out of your dome. Shelter Systems’ floors are made of the same durable white Shelter material that we make the dome's covering of. The floors are not sewn into the domes in order to prevent floor seams from leaking. Having a separate floor also makes it easy to keep your dome clean if you plan to take it down and store it, as you can roll up a dirty floor separate. Installing the floor can be done easily in 30-45 minutes, using the included 12 General Purpose Grip Clip tarp fasteners.

If you choose to use your own tarp as a floor, you may still want to purchase General Purpose Grip Clip tarp fasteners to help secure it to the side walls. Grip Clips are offered below.

Prices:
31' Floor-$349
30' Floor-$315
20' Floor -$140
18' Floor -$113
14' Floor -$88
11' Floor -$53

Porch
sunshadeA porch is an excellent addition to a dome, and can be easily attached in minutes to any of our domes. A porch can be used to keep your dome dry if you want to leave a door open in a warm rain, space to take off a raincoat or boots before entering your dome, or for hanging wet gear underneath it to dry. The standard porch covering is a 5 ½ feet by 5 1/2 feet arched square made out of our translucent woven ripstop material for maximum light transmission. Porches can also be special ordered in other materials, including white for less light transmission or white/black for maximum shade.

Price: $91 (not offered at this time)

Grip Clip™ Tarp Fasteners
That which holds it all together, Grip Clip™ tarp fasteners were originally designed to make our domes, but you will find endless uses for them about your dome, at home, in the garden, while camping, and at construction sites. Grip Clips have a unique mechanism for joining panels of material together and/or for attaching anchor lines, without perforating the tarp or sheeting. They "button" on quickly and securely, yet can be removed and re-positioned as you like.

If you decide to make your own floor out of a tarp, use 12 of the Light Fabric Grip Clips to secure the tarp to the walls of your dome in order to keep the floor from sliding around. The General Purpose Grip Clip tarp fasteners can add additional wind stability to our standard sun shades. You can also make your own shelter taps, canopies, sunshades, and windscreens instantly from any plastic sheeting or fabric. Almost indestructible and at times indispensable™, Grip Clips will help you create what you need. More information on the Grip Clip Tarp Fasteners.

Liners
A liner will greatly increase the winter comfort of your dome by creating an evenly heated space, as well as saving on heating fuel. A liner reduces heat loss from radiation, creates an insulating dead air space of 2"-3” (the liner's air does not circulate with the dome air), and reduces condensation that often occurs in very cold situations. Installation of a liner into your dome is easy and can be done in about 1 hour. Simply tie it in place at each intersection point on the dome, pulling it tight. You can order a liner with your dome and install it right away, or decide to add one later. Note that a liner is not necessary to be quite comfortable in our domes; they are dry and easy to heat even without a liner.
The full liner is constructed of a white fire-retardant ripstop film with clear vinyl windows for a wonderfully bright and warm space. We also make liners for our greenhouses out of the translucent greenhouse covering. Photo to the right shows a 20' dome with a liner.

Price: 31'-$3024; 30'-$2074; 20'-$962; 18'-$810; 14'-$670 Liners are special orders and are non-returnable (not offered at this time)

Scotch Heavy Duty All-Weather Duct Tape
clear duct tapeIf you plan on using your dome in high wind, dusty, or rainy conditions, consider using Scotch Heavy Duty Gray All-Weather Duct Tape and or Scotch Transparent Long Lasting Duct Tape to seal wall shingles, the floor, or unused doors. Both tapes are UV stabilized and hold up well over time. The Heavy Duty Tape lasts longer in the sun than the Transparent Tape, but the Transparent Tape looks better. Always apply tape to a clean and dry dome. We do not recommend regular duct tape, as it does not hold up well with sun exposure.
Both tapes are available at most hardware stores, or can be purchased through Shelter Systems at a comparable price.
Price for 20 yards of Transparent Long Lasting Duct Tape $11

Shelter Systems' Special Super Strong Woven Ripstop Films
Shelter Systems' coverings are made of a special plastic copolymer (composed of carbon and hydrogen which is chemically similar to wax) that is stretched until it becomes stiff. At this point, it is at its maximum tensile (pull strength), where it is sliced into thin strips and woven into a fabric and laminated on both sides with sheets of the same stretch-strengthened material. The result is a stabilized and super strengthened material with amazing tear resistance. We offer a variety of these fabrics, for use in endless applications.

All Shelter Systems' coverings incorporate UV sunscreen inhibitors to help block damage from the sun and give the covering a longer useful life. The coverings are sold 6 feet wide, at any length, and can be sewn using a home sowing machine to meet all your needs. Most needles will work, and we recommend using a cotton polyester heavy-duty thread (available at most sewing stores). Sew 1/2" "fin" seams, at about 10 stitches per inch. The seams tend not to leak but if your use requires them to be totally watertight, silicone rubber can be used as a sealant.
